Arts throughout the years have depicted the culture and history of mankind thus leading to the origin of arts dating back to the beginning of humanity resulting into Arts translating tradition by depicting them in forms of literature, music, dance, painting, sculpture, movies and photography.
Arts is an assorted stream which includes the study of fine arts, virtual arts, performing arts, literary arts, humanities and social science. Thus, resulting in arts being the necessary tool to measure the development of a state, creativity and social structure at a point in time. As Arts has so many subjects under it, it gives a plethora of options as to what field you may want to have a career in.
After completing their 10th, an aspirant may opt for the Arts stream and later take it up for their bachelor's and master's degree in Arts specialising in a subject of their choice. The Undergraduate course is three-year-long, and the Master's Course is for two years.
There are certain criteria to be satisfied to take admission in a university to pursue arts. Each of these guidelines describes the requirements a candidate needs to fulfil to apply for these courses.
Criteria for Undergraduates:
The aspirant must score at least 50% marks during their 10+2 from a recognised board – ISC/ CBSE or any state board.
The candidate should not be over 22 years old.
The applicant can belong to any stream- Science, Commerce or Humanities. Belonging to Arts stream at an intermediate level will be just an added advantage.
There are no cut off marks for students belonging to scheduled caste or scheduled tribe.
Eligibility Criteria for Postgraduates:
The aspirant must have graduated from a recognised college/university.
The aspirant must score at least 50% marks during their graduation.
Entrance Exams for Arts
To get enrolled in an arts graduate degree most colleges consider 12th standard marks percentage only, while some universities have their specific entrance exams. Specific exams are:
Jawaharlal Nehru University Entrance Exam (JNUEE)- It is an online exam conducted by the National Testing Agency for undergraduates and graduates. The courses offered are all around the arts. Around 1 lakh aspirants appear for this test every year.
Banaras Hindu University Undergraduate Entrance Test (BHU UET)- Another entrance test conducted every year for undergraduates and graduates of arts is BHU UET. It is conducted both online and offline. They test you on mental ability, numerical ability, general knowledge and language comprehension.
Delhi University Entrance Test (DUET)- The National Testing Agency organises this exam on behalf of Delhi University. This exam is conducted each year for two hours and is conducted online. They test students on current affairs, logical reasoning, and analytical ability and communication skills.
Tata Institute of Social Science Bachelor's Admission Test (TISS NET)- This is a computer-based entrance exam conducted once a year. It tests on Mathematics, English and General Awareness. Around 1 lakh students apply for this exam.
The scope of the arts discipline is diverse and immeasurable. There are several subjects under it which can be explored by an arts graduate. Art can be found everywhere as growth, and designed structure is all around, man-made or extrapolated.

Humanities is the study of human and society related, and it is a specialisation in the Arts stream. Humanities include languages, history, public administration, and politics. Whereas, Arts is inclusive of performing arts, virtual arts, literary arts, humanities and social science.
Around 30 per cent of the undergraduates are placed in the 2021-22 placement session of Government Arts College, Kumbakonam. And for postgraduate students, 70 percent of them got a placement job in the same year.
As per the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) data, 335 undergraduate students were placed in the 2021-22 placement session. While 1125 students graduated in a minimum time of three years, 552 students opted for higher studies. In the year, 21 postgraduate students got placed and three students opted for higher studies out of the total 30 graduates.
A person, who has passed class 12 or any other examination recognized as equivalent thereto, can apply for the UG course at Government Arts College, Kumbakonam. A candidate who has passed Bachelor degree of 3 years duration under 10+2+3 pattern from any recognized university can get admission in the PG course at Government Arts College, Kumbakonam.
Just like PhD there is no fixed number of intake for MPhil courses at Government Arts College, Kumbakonam.
The faculty of Government Arts College Kumbakonam consists of department heads, associate professors, assistant professors and guest lecturers.
