Top Exams to get admission in B.Tech in Petroleum Engineering
There are many engineering entrance exams conducted at university level or national level to give admission in engineering courses for undergraduate programmes. Some universities/colleges that provide admission on the basis of the marks in the 12th board exam also. The list of top 6 engineering entrance exams is given below.
JEE Main - Joint Entrance Examinations Main is an engineering entrance test conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA). The top rankers in this exam will get admission to top tier engineering colleges(NITs) within India. This is also a qualifying exam for JEE Advanced. Students who have passed class 12th science or appear in class 12th science can apply for this exam. This exam gives three chances(one with class 12th appearing and two chances after completing the class 12th) to qualify and get admission in the top engineering colleges in India. This test is held two times(one in January and second in April) every year through online mode.
JEE Advanced - Joint Entrance Examinations (JEE) Advanced is an engineering entrance test conducted by one of the seven zonal IITs to give admission to the IITs/ISM. This test is held annually through online mode. The students who have qualified in the JEE main and have minimum qualifying percentage in the class 12th(Science stream) are eligible to appear in this exam. It gives you two chances (One with 12th class, second after completing class 12th) to get admission in the IITs for b.tech courses. In this exam, you will have 2 papers on the same day with 2.5 hours of the gap in between. The time duration for each paper is 3 hours. This is one of the toughest exams in the world because of the level of the question and exam pattern.
VITEEE - Vellore Institute of Technology Entrance Exam is conducted by Vellore University to give admission to all the campuses of VIT for b.tech courses. This test is conducted through online mode in April every year. The Time duration of this exam is 150 mins in which you have 125 questions to solve.
BITSAT - Birla Institute of Technology and Science admission test is conducted by Birla Institute to give admission to all three campuses BITS Pilani, BITS Goa, and BITs Hyderabad for b.tech courses. This test is conducted around mid of May every year through online mode.
SRMJEEE- SRM joint engineering entrance exam is conducted by SRM University to provide admission for b.tech courses in all campuses of SRM universities. The mode of the exam is online, which is conducted in mid-April every year.
Course Curriculum - B.Tech Petroleum Engineering
B.Tech in Petroleum Engineering has studies related to different methods to extract oil and natural gas deposits below the earth’s surface. The B.Tech course helps to learn design and develop new innovative methods that are efficient in extracting oil and gas deposits below the earth’s surface. B.Tech in petroleum engineering can be divided into two major specializations.
Petroleum Upstream Engineering | This specialization in petroleum engineering deals with the fundamentals of exploration of new potential fields of crude oil & natural gas and it’s production for starters. One will also learn about different processes like drilling exploratory wells and subsequently drilling and operating the wells to recover the crude oil or raw natural gas and processes to bring it to the surface. |
Petroleum Downstream Engineering | This specialization of petroleum engineering deals with downstream operations that involve the processes of converting crude oil and natural gas into the finished product. This specialization deals with the processes of refining crude oil and converting it into gasoline, diesel, natural gas liquids, heating oil, synthetic rubber, lubricants, antifreeze, fertilizers & pesticides, plastics, and many other products. This specialization covers all the technical aspects of processing of oil and natural gas, for the production of the petroleum finished product including, costing and budgeting. |
Reservoir Engineering | This specialization related to petroleum engineering is about determining the location and amount of fuel that is reserved underground. The course imparts about different methods to assess oil and gas deposits underground and estimate the reservoirs of the oil and gas. The course also deals with geology and fluid mechanics which will help to determine the location and amount of fuel in underground reservoirs. Reservoir engineers often work with advanced equipment such as imaging programs and computer modeling. |
Drilling Engineering | As the name suggests drilling engineer deals with the process of drilling the well to extract crude oil and natural gas keeping environmental safety in mind. They also do costing and budgeting analysis of drilling and activities related to it. |
Production Engineering | The main function of a production engineer is to evaluate inflow and outflow performance between the reservoir and the wellbore. It also includes designing completion systems, perforating, including tubing selection, sand control, hydraulic fracturing and matrix stimulation. The course related to petroleum engineering helps to learn the designing of the equipment, selection of the equipment to extract crude oil and gas. |
Some of the key factors which candidates need to keep in mind if they plan to pursue B.Tech in Petroleum Engineering
The study of the physical properties of petroleum products is a must along with basic knowledge of chemistry especially about the physical and chemical properties of matters.
The course B.Tech in Petroleum Engineering helps learn about the extracting process, refinery process, drilling and converting crude oil into finished products. The study of the working principle of the machinery for these processes requires basic knowledge of mechanics.
