On the 15th of October 1840, Presidency College started as a preparatory school in a leased building in Egmore known as Edinburgh Home. Presidency College facilities and basic necessities are provided to all the students so that they can learn new things with ease. The basic facility at Presidency College includes a functional library, medical facility and sports grounds for games like handball. There are two hostels on the Presidency College Chennai campus that are Victoria Boys Hostel and College Ladies Hostel. The hostel provides a mess facility too. Presidency College UG admission procedure is merit-based which is calculated on the basis of marks secured in the 12th class. The prospective students are required to fill the admission application form as the 12th results are published. The student must submit the application form either manually in person at the college office or by mail to qualify for admission to the undergraduate programme. Students must, however, register on an online PG admission web portal in order to be considered for postgraduate admission. The Presidency College Council awards both full and partial scholarships. Presidency College Chennai scholarships are available to students enrolled in the college's B.A., B.Sc., B.Com, M.A., M.Sc., M.Com, and M.C.A. programmes. The maximum scholarships that are offered to students can not be more than 4 percent of the total strength of the college. At Presidency College other than institutional scholarships, students can apply for national or state level scholarships. It must be noted that a student can only avail one scholarship at a time. Students are encouraged to complete their studies without financial constraints owing to the PC Chennai scholarship.
